Op Art 3-D Self Portraits! One of my very favorite art lessons

Optical Art ('Op Art') Self Portraits in 3-D! We even make our own 3-D glasses to understand color theory and how the cones and rods work when your eyes & brain work together to understand color! The students LOVE using the mirrors to see what their features look like & can't get enough of how the 3-D glasses make certain features POP off the page!

Welcome to Miss Oetken's Art Room and talented ARTISTS!

You know the great artist Pablo Picasso once said these very profound words: "Every child is an artist. The problem is to remain an artist once we grow up." Well let me just say, that myself along with my students follow this everyday! I have managed to stay a kid myself and show that ART is a really an exciting journey that connects history and cultures from long ago to now! We start with a history time-line that takes us on an adventure from when the cavemen first roamed (and were the first to create the some of the most beneficial art!) the earth, to the discovery of the art in designing and making the Egyptians' sarcophagus', to Monet's dabs of paint forming the beautiful waterlillies to Picasso's misunderstood mixed up faces in his portraits, to Modern Art such as the glass, alien-like forms like that of Dale Chihuly. Phew! And that's just a glimpse of what we actually focus on in our art! What is art? Wanna find out? Then take a look at what we're studying on my blog! You might find yourself becoming an Art DIVA yourself!

Miss Kati Oetken: Waukee in West Des Moines, IA; I am a K-5 ART TEACHER currently teaching K-5 ART in Waukee School District. I hope to show you some great ideas that will help you as an educator, student or parent as to how I teach or how others can teach important aspects of art. Oh and don't forget the main ingredients--EXCITEMENT AND FUN! Have fun and get involved...because art is ANYTHING, but boring! I live in a beautiful loft with my beautiful 'furry diva', Claudia. I love music,art, and my students! I also am obsessed with art toys, urban scarves, funky headbands, and baking/cooking creative entertaining dinner parties:)And, of course, hello, ART!:)
