SPRING 2012 Newsletter-Literacy in the Art Room
Our schools are really trying to push literacy in the classroom and I wanted to inform parents what we've been doing to try to encourage literacy in the ART ROOM. That's what this newsletter is mainly about. Enjoy and bring on Spring Break! Yippee!

Welcome BACK 2011 fall school year with Kandinsky abstract art!
Each table was a station with a new art supply where students got to try, experiement, and learn new techniques! These mediums/materials included shimmery, metallic watercolor, liquid watercolor in BRIGHT colors, charcoal pencil, chalk pastels, oil pastels, and watercolor pencils!
We circulated from station to station & after 5 minutes of using the material on a 12x 18 white piece of paper at a station, I got to use my fun bird whistle to signal when to move to the next station with our paper! What was the interesting thing, was that most students just got to play and have fun on their paper. AND these multi media drawings started to look A LOT like the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky's compostional abstact pieces of art! Interesting!

2011 Student ART SHOW!
Hello parents and students!
The 2011 Student ART SHOW is coming up fast! It's on MAY 5th 2011. Here is some info you need to know about the show:
There WILL be an elementary selective ART SHOW at the Grinnell Arts Center & Gallery/Arts Academy on MAY 5, 2011 and the reception will be from 4:00-6:30 pm. The show will be up for viewing from MAY 5 - MAY 26 within the gallery hours. It will be an all-elementary art show with the Grinnell Christian School, I believe. Picked pieces for the show were 'blindly picked' which means I don't even look at the name and pick soley on the visual finished product that I think exemplify advanced skills. However, everyone's a talented artist and I'm proud of every single student!
I was informed that all the students shows are now at the Grinnell Art Center (926 Broad Street- the old Stewart Library) NOT at the Mayor's gallery on the 2nd level of the Community Center (city office headquarters). That is now under the care of the Grinnell Art Center/Academy. If some of your students are looking for their artwork, it's most likely in the art show. I'm going to announce the students accepted into the art show in my blog, newsletter, or letter that will be sent home. Keep an eye on that blog, newsletter, or letter going home for updates!

Where is my student's art? Hmmm...
Hello parents! I know some of you had mentioned you haven't seen a lot of art come home yet! Reason? Well there are several 1) I only have them once a 6 day cycle and we do projects that require more than the 45 minutes to complete, so sometimes we have to take several classtimes to complete. 2) Miss Oetken has 4 buildings and has been trying to save the art before it goes home to look through! I like to look through the projects to see our progress and to be looking for pieces that deserve recognition in art, say an art show!:) Sorry for the delay, but they will be coming home soon, I promise...if it makes it's way home with your son or daughter that is:) Also, I have been informed that some parents haven't received my newsletters. I am going to see if I can post them somehow on my blog here. Looking into it!
